These ganseys were knitted by Eriskay women for their menfolk, with the individual motifs on the sweaters identifying them as a fishing crew associated with a particular family.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn a similar manner to these Eriskay women, I designed this sweater for my son Hamish to wear on his first deployment with the British Antarctic Survey stationed at Rothera Field Station. As ever wool being the best material to wear in such conditions insulating, breathable and resilient, it is also fun to think of my Hebridean yarn so very far south in the Antarctic.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHamish shared some photos from his time working for British Antarctic Survey at Rothera Field Station on my blog: \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/birlinn-yarn.myshopify.com\/blogs\/news\/photos-from-the-antarctic\" title=\"HERE\"\u003eHERE\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTraditionally designed as very tight fitting to be worn under oilskins at sea, this gansey has been designed with a little more positive ease. To suit a more contemporary style, the patterning is less elaborate than traditional Eriskay sweaters but still echoes our island fishing culture through the use of the Fishing Net and Harbour Steps motifs.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe sweater is knitted in the round from the bottom up with false seams either side that reach up to a diamond gusset under the arms to allow stretch and flexibility. The front and back are then separated and knitted flat then grafted together over the shoulders. Stitches are picked up around the armholes with the sleeves knitted down to the cuffs. Here in the Hebrides, on a cold, clear winters night we have beautiful dark skies and I love nothing more than to step outside to seek out the polar star amongst the myriad of sparkling constellations. If we are lucky, we may also catch a glimpse of the northern lights.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA key feature in this sweater design is the polar star motif down the length of the arm that uses the Eriskay star gansey pattern as a starting point. The sweater is designed to be worn on breezy Sunday stomps or to cosy up on the sofa with a good book but will also look great in the city on a cold winters day.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe sweater pattern is suitable for intermediate skilled knitters. It is loose fitting with split sides and a back slightly longer than the front. All parts are knitted flat then sewn together. The sleeves are cast on at the wrist using a provisional method then knitted up from the wrists, continued across half of each shoulder (left \u0026amp; right) and are then grafted across the back and front to form a yoke. It’s a modified drop-shoulder pullover with slight dolman shaping in the underarm. Worked bottom up and in the round to the armholes where two options are given, either continue across the armholes in-the-round with steeks or work across the armholes flat with no steeks. After the armholes, decreases shape the shoulder while you work in the round to the neck shaping and then continue flat as you shape the neck. Stitches are picked up around the neckline and the collar is continued in the round and folded to create a sturdy double layer. Two crew members were from the Outer Hebrides – Donald MacKillop and Angus MacLeod from our island of Berneray.
