Designed by Lauriane Bernard this Bretton style striped sweater is named after the J Class racing yachts Endeavour I and II, owned by the English aviation tycoon Thomas Sopwith, that took part in the 1934 and 1937 America’s Cup race.
The America’s Cup was scheduled for September 1934, however, in July many of Endeavour‘s professional crew went on strike for more pay. Instead of acceding to their demands, Sopwith decided to recruit an amateur crew instead. Two crew members were from the Outer Hebrides – Donald MacKillop and Angus MacLeod from our island of Berneray. Their contribution to the crew was such that both men went on to race with Sopwith on Endeavour II in the America’s Cup in 1937.
Following discussions with French knitwear designer Lauriane Bernard, we agreed to name her Breton ‘yachting style’ striped, sweater Endeavour in honour of these Berneray men who participated in the America’s cup, an event that is to this day is the pinnacle of yachting skill and glamour.

Endeavour is a timeless unisex sweater that is knitted seamlessly from the bottom up. The sleeves and body are knitted in the round separately then joined together with raglan decreases.
Positive ease about 12cm.
Chest sizing in cm:
XS (76-81.5), S (86-91.5), M (96.5-101.5), L (106.5-111.5), XL (116.5-122), 2XL (127-132), 3XL (137-142), 4XL (147.5-152), 5XL (157.5-162.5)
Finished garment chest measurements in cm:
XS (90), S (100), M (110), L (120), XL (130), 2XL (141), 3XL (151), 4XL (161), 5XL (171).
Yarn as shown: Main Colour (MC) Bog Cotton (Pure Cheviot) and Stripe Colour (SC) Ocean (Hebridean and Cheviot Blend) both 100% wool, 4 Ply – 50g (175 meters).
Yarn quantities in balls – MC&SC: XS(5&2), S(6&2), M(6&2), L(7&3), XL(8&3), 2XL(9&3), 3XL(10&4), 4XL(10&4), 5XL(11&4) balls
