Embellish your project with our Birlinn galley wooden tag.
A Birlinn was the Hebridean interpretation of a knaar or Viking long boat. When the Vikings arrived in the Hebrides around 850 AD, their knaar long boats were built to sail fast and straight over lengthy sea passages. However, the Hebrides are a scattering of islands and rocks which are difficult to navigate, therefore, over time the knaar was shorted to enable it to turn more easily for inter-island seafaring and became the Birlinn or Hebridean galley.
The image we use as our logo is taken from a stone carving in the 15th Century Rodel Chapel in South Harris just across the water from the Isle of Berneray where we live.
Why not embellish your knitting project with a little bit of Hebridean history and add a tag to your basket with your Birlinn Yarn.
