Every Easter holiday of my childhood was spent within the Cairngorm mountains in the Scottish Highlands. Skiing if there was snow, hiking and biking if there was not. It conjures up memories of the sound of wind in the Caledonian forests, the earthy smell of peat bogs and pine sap, with cosy cottages with open fires to come back to after a long day on the hill.
Time spent in the Cairngorms is closely linked to our old family friend Myrtle Simpson, an Arctic explorer who was awarded the Polar Medal for her endeavours. Spirited and inspriring. This headband has been designed with Myrtle in mind and takes inspiration from the purple and pink heather, grey-green lichen, peat and granite rock of the Cairngorms.
Hear about Myrtle’s life as an Arctic explorer on my blog ‘In Conversation with Myrtle Simpson’: HERE
As a small fair isle project it is a perfect introduction to colour work. If you are a more experienced knitter you could rattle them out as presents for friends and family.
